Learning to read was really painless for my kids and they learned how to read easily and still LOVE to read. I need to have my children enrolled in the Academy for various reasons. some of the less known curriculums such as frontline phonics or rocket phonics. In my experience Abeka used Phonics past the grade that you stated and from K-2 students learned to read and from 3rd grade on, they read to learn. His problem is spelling. Our church school uses abeka and the K4 program is like a pre-k or early kinder program and K5 is actual kindergarten. Since I was tired of beating my head against the wall I decided to just go with the A Beka because it is more popular. I can't get my hands on good samples of either. I plan to start at the beginning and work through. (great. We aren't around many spanish speaking people so that certainly doesn't help. She picks up Math concepts easily and is kind of cut and dry- We have friends who use Math U See and it was just not for her. She was since day one, one level behind in CLE LA, but on-level in reading (her big struggle was math). We are now using Rosetta Stone for spanish and she likes it alot more. He does well with all of the subjects, sometimes history is a little difficult, but it has been acceptable.
